River Legacy Park, Arlington: A Dog Owner's Guide
Last checked: October 31, 2026
If you want a long, mostly flat, tree-lined walk with your dog in Tarrant County, River Legacy Park is hard to beat. It follows the curves of the Trinity River in north Arlington, it is big enough to spread out in, and much of the paved trail sits under bottomland forest. Here is what we could confirm before you load up the leash and the water bowl.

Dog Rules
- Leash: Dogs are welcome throughout the park on leash. Arlington's park ordinance (Section 5.05, as amended by Ord. 07-043) requires pets in city parks to be on a leash no longer than 15 feet at all times, except in designated off-leash sites, and owners must carry bags and pick up after their dogs.
- Off-leash areas: None in River Legacy Park itself that we could confirm. For off-leash time, see Tails 'N Trails Dog Park below.
- Nature Center: The River Legacy Living Science Center allows service dogs only, so pets wait outside.
Shade and Heat
- Reviewers say much of the trail is shaded, which helps a lot in Texas heat. The park is mostly hardwood forest along the river.
- Picnic and playground areas have little shade, so do not count on open lawns for cool rest stops.
- TrailLink warns that one stretch of trail has no amenities, so bring plenty of water for both of you.
- Best time of day: Early morning in summer. One reviewer went "before it got too hot." Another longtime runner advises avoiding the trails around sunrise and sunset during coyote mating season, after a coyote followed them and their dog for about half a mile. Late morning may be a good middle ground.
- Hot pavement: The main trail is concrete, which heats up in the sun. Do the back of your hand test (seven seconds on the pavement) before letting paws on any sunny stretch.
Water for Dogs
- The park sits on the West Fork of the Trinity River and has river overlooks, creeks, and ponds. There is also a kayak and canoe put-in on the river.
- Swimming: We found no park rule on dogs in the water, but Texas Parks and Wildlife says this stretch of the Trinity is suitable for paddling and incidental contact, not swimming, and warns against high, turbulent water. We would keep dogs out of the river.
Crowds and Reactive-Dog Notes
- Reviewers describe it as "fairly busy," but with enough space between people to be alone at times.
- A local on Reddit says it is usually not crowded in the middle of the day, and the park is so spread out that you can find a quieter spot even when it is busy. Expect more people after work hours and on weekends.
- The paved trail is shared with bikers, joggers, and inline skaters. The mountain bike trails are also popular with cyclists, so keep a short leash on blind curves.
- Wildlife is real here: coyotes have been reported, and the park lists 400 species of wildlife.
Nearby Dog-Friendly Stops
- Tails 'N Trails Dog Park (Arlington): A free, fully fenced 5.7-acre dog park with wooded shade, water, benches, and waste stations, run by the City of Arlington. It is at 950 SE Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington, TX 76018 (City of Arlington), in south Arlington, roughly 10 miles south of River Legacy in a straight line, so plan on a longer drive across town.
Before You Go
- Mountain bike trails close after rain; closures are posted by the River Legacy Foundation.
- Pack water, bags, and a towel (it is a river floodplain, so expect mud after storms).
